Quaker Marine Supply

Established in Philadelphia in 1949 by Joe Kadison, a veteran of the Coast Guard, Quaker Marine Supply boasts a rich history of catering to maritime enthusiasts, notably in Sag Harbour, an historic community of African American labourers, fishermen and whalers who had the opportunity to thrive, own land and live freely during the era of segregation

The company initially started as an outfitter focused on marine hardware and apparel. In the 1960s, QMS gained recognition for its long-brimmed caps, especially the Swordfish and the Oysterman, which featured a patent-leather bill. The Oysterman cap became a favourite of Ernest Hemingway, who donned it while duck hunting in Idaho and sport fishing in Cuba and Key West.
