By 1980 it was crystal clear: “The sport shirt of choice is Lacoste ,” declared The Official Preppy Handbook. “Only the all-cotton model will do, the one with cap sleeves with the ribbed edging, narrow collar and two-button placket (never buttoned).”
Bearing the name of its founder René Lacoste, the French sporting label represented among the first few sporting brands founded by a sporting legend.. In the prime of his tennis career, Lacoste would develop a polo shirt which would soon be an important mark through the preppy sporting ranks of both tennis and golf. Known for its great fit, quality and availability in several colours, up until the ’70s, the brand was ubiquitous through the preppy world. Allegedly inspiring Ralph Lauren’s own famous polo
